Though Kentucky prides itself on its fine horseracing tradition, Tennessee has a fine legacy of its own in the Iroquois Steeplechase, which takes place at the Percy Warner Park in Nashville the second weekend of May each year. It’s a charity event and one of the longest-standing traditions of southern tailgating at its finest. Women, pack your best bonnets, and men, your seersucker suits if you want to fit in with this horsy set, many members of whom have had their tailgating spots passed down to them from generations before. This is considered one of the ultimate Nashville “see and be seen” events, but one with an added dose of depth, as proceeds benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
