Liberty Island is home to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The Statue of Liberty was given by France to the people of the United States as a gift of friendship in 1886. Her full name is actually Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World. The base houses a museum where you can learn about her humble beginnings. Afterward, find out if you are one of the 40 percent of Americans who had an ancestor that entered the country through Ellis Island at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Statue Cruises offers cruises that depart from Battery Park throughout the day, but make sure to purchase a ticket and depart before 2 p.m. if you want to visit both attractions. Beginning this fall, the Statue of Liberty will undergo a renovation project slated to continue into the fall of 2012. Upgrades include, new stairways and elevators, as well as new water and mechanical systems. Liberty Island will remain open throughout the upgrades.
