The rest of the country might call it a sub or a hero, but in Philadelphia, that cold-cut sandwich on a long crusty bun is a hoagie. End of story. When it comes to finding the city’s best hoagie, every Philadelphian is loyal to one shop or another. But you can’t go wrong at Sarcone’s Deli near the Italian Market, where they use their own freshly-baked bread. (Tip: go early or order ahead, because they often run out of bread by mid-afternoon.) For a more gourmet version, go to Paesano’s—the Arista hoagie, stuffed with roasted suckling pig, hot peppers and broccoli rabe, has even been praised by Bon Appetit magazine. Philadelphia’s equally beloved cheesesteak is another hotly debated icon. Thinly sliced beef and melted cheese are barely contained within a long chewy roll. Do you take yours with or without onions? With Cheez Whiz or provolone? These are the questions you must answer before reaching the counter at Pat’s King of Steaks or Geno’s Steaks, two of the city’s most famous cheesesteak vendors. They stand right across from one another at the intersection of Ninth Street and Passyunk Avenue—and neither has time for indecisive customers.
