The foundation of a nation was laid in this elegant brick building now called Independence Hall. Constructed between 1732 and 1756 as the Pennsylvania State House, the hall became the famous site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, adopted in 1776, and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Touring the building transports you back to these revolutionary times. Period furniture is arranged as it was during the 18th century, and George Washington’s original chair—painted with a rising sun—stands at the head of the Assembly Room. The original inkstand used to sign the Declaration and Constitution is on display too. A free guided tour by a National Park ranger will bring each historic room to life, with details of the important events that happened there.
