In the northeast corner of Center City, the Old City neighborhood is Philadelphia’s most charming and vibrant. Historic warehouses and lofts have been converted into art galleries, boutiques, cafés and homes—reminiscent of New York’s SoHo. Follow cobblestone streets to historic sites like the Betsy Ross House, the 1740 home of America’s most famous seamstress (and, many believe, the creator of the first American flag). Duck down Elfreth’s Alley, a tiny residential street known for its beautifully preserved 18th-century homes. Visit elegant Christ Church, whose tower and steeple made it the tallest building in the country until 1856. Shop the indie boutiques that line Third Street, and as night falls, join the locals as they fill Old City’s restaurants and lounges, particularly along Market and Chestnut Streets. If you’re visiting on the first Friday of the month, visit the more than 40 Old City art galleries who collectively host an evening open house.
