Set majestically on a hill, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has been dubbed the Parthenon on the Parkway. America's third largest art museum was built for the nation's centennial in 1876, and its main building includes three linked Greek Revival-style temples that sit atop the steps immortalized in Rocky. The museum's collection is nothing short of world-class, with 225,000 pieces and 200 galleries spanning 2,000 years of art. In recent years it has hosted blockbuster shows for artists including Cezanne, Degas and Dali, while the permanent collection is famous for major works from the Renaissance and French Impressionism. Other highlights include 80 period rooms that form spectacular architectural backdrops to exhibits from the 16th to 19th centuries.
