Established in 1892, Reading Terminal Market is the longest continuously operating farmers market in the U.S. It’s part of the old Reading Railroad train shed, an impressive and historic free-span arched-roof building. With more than 80 vendors and restaurants, the market is a bustling crossroads of food and cultures. Amish farmers and local purveyors sell fresh seafood and meats, artisanal cheese and salumi and seasonal fruits and vegetables—all the makings of a perfect picnic. The market also houses some of the best little eateries in the city. Eat decadent mac 'n' cheese (famously praised by Oprah) at Delilah’s or an award-winning hot roast beef sandwich at DiNic’s. Indulge your sweet tooth with fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies from The Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, or an only-in-Philly “pumple cake”—a whole pie baked inside a whole cake from Flying Monkey Bakery.
