Few symbols embody the story of American freedom better than the Liberty Bell. Weighing in at 2,080 pounds, the Liberty Bell was cast for the Pennsylvania State House (today called Independence Hall). The original bell came from London but cracked after its very first use in Philadelphia. It was melted down and recast by local craftsmen in 1753, and inscribed with a Bible verse: “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). The bell rang at the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence and at George Washington’s birthday celebration in 1846. On this latter day it received its fatal crack that silenced it forever. Still, the bell was taken as the symbol for many civic movements thereafter—from the abolition of slavery to the women’s suffrage movement. Today, it’s on display in a sunlit glass pavilion, not far from Independence Hall, where interactive exhibits illustrate its place in U.S. history.
