Pat’s claims to have invented the first steak sandwich—chopped steak with fried onions on a hoagie bun—in 1930. The addition of cheese made the famous Philadelphia cheesesteak, and it’s what Pat’s has become known for. The restaurant is little more than a 24-hour walk-up counter with a few outdoor tables. Heed the sign that tells you how to order your cheesesteak: “one wiz with” means you want your sandwich with Cheese Wiz and onions.
