Portland is known as the City of Roses. So it’s not surprising that there’s a drop-dead gorgeous rose garden located in the heart of the city. Founded in 1917, the oasis is composed of different gardens exhibiting 6,800 rose bushes and 557 varieties. There’s even a Shakespeare Garden featuring herbs, trees and flowers mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. And the 5.5-acre Japanese Garden has been hailed as one of the most authentic outside Japan. Look for stone lanterns, pagodas and bridges galore.
