Portland has been a model for progressive public transportation and urban planning. The city’s multi-faceted transport system (streetcar, bus and light rail) makes it easy for visitors to get around affordably. The streetcar and Max light rail are free within the city center’s “free rail zone” (http://trimet.org/fares/freerailzone.htm). And it’s $2.30 for a one way ride on the MAX train from the airport to downtown (the red line). It takes around 38 minutes, is easy and sure beats the $35 cab fare.
Cabs cannot be hailed. Either walk to a to walk to a taxi station downtown, or call one (Radio Cab is a local favorite, (503) 227-1212). They’re usually easy to come by. For more extensive information on getting around, visit http://www.travelportland.com/media/acmedkit/motion.html
