Powell’s City of Books is an essential destination for passionate book lovers visiting Portland. Established in 1971, the independent book haven has become an empire with six locations in the Portland metropolitan area. However, the Burnside location gets marks for being the largest used and new bookstore in the world. In fact, the place is so vast (with count ‘em 68,000 feet) there are maps to acquaint yourself and even walking tours. With more than a million new and used books in their inventory and over 3,500 different sections (including out-of-print and hard-to-find books) chances are there’s something for you. Check out the Basil Hallward Gallery upstairs where there are art exhibits and authors' events. (In fact, Joyce Carol Oates, President Jimmy Carter and Annie Leibovitz have visited.)
