It sounds like something from a Village People album, but this is the real deal: former Providence cop Tony Lepore served the city for many years. Among his duties? Directing traffic. One day on the job, Lepore began to mimic a Candid Camera sketch he had seen, motioning cars through the intersection by dancing. People seemed to enjoy it, so he started to direct traffic that way. Though he retired in 1988, Providence’s mayor asked Lepore to return and direct traffic during the Christmas season. You can still witness Lepore’s moves during December, so if you’re in town, make it a point to track him down.
