Created in 1808 by the King of Portugal John VI, the land was originally intended to be a royal spice garden. It has grown quite a bit since then and is now home to more than 6,000 species of tropical plants. There are many rare and interesting kinds of flora here, including multiple species of orchid and cactus. Bird-watchers will delight in the many species of colorful tropical birds that seem to be everywhere you look. The garden is a gorgeous retreat from the urban pace of Rio.
