The magnificent Imperial Palace was originally built as a governor’s mansion in 1743 for rulers of Colonial Brazil. Throughout the 19th century, it was home to both emperors of Portugal and emperors of the newly independent “Empire of Brazil” and was the site of many major events in Brazil’s history, including the abolition of slavery. Today it is a beautiful historic site and museum, featuring various permanent and temporary cultural exhibitions, a library, a bookstore and a small café.
