Finally, a children’s museum that proves to be just as interesting and intoxicating to adults as it is to imaginative tots. Living up to it’s tagline, “national museum of play,” this interactive museum features a re-creation of Sesame Street, a real life butterfly garden, the National Toy Hall of Fame, a miniature grocery store where kids can shop and scan their own groceries, a life-size pop-up book, a 15,000-piece collection of dolls, dollhouses and toys (mind-bogglingly, all from one donor), a carousel and a 1,700-gallon coral reef aquarium. Best of all, most exhibits have information to engage adults (such as a look at how fairy tales have changed overtime) while the kids are scaling a pirate ship. Plus, there’s also a great gift shop and an actual 1950s Skyliner Diner that’s perfect for grabbing a bite between activities.
