For 40 years, suffragist Susan B. Anthony lived in a simple brick home at 17 Madison Street. It was the site of her infamous arrest in 1872 for having the audacity to cast a vote. A National Historic Landmark, the unassuming yet well preserved home is a museum dedicated to her life’s work to gain voting rights for women and equality for all. Filled with Anthony’s personal belongings (typewriters, desk, bed, portraits of friends and colleagues and a dress made of black satin), the home also includes suffrage artifacts, research materials related to her work and a third-floor attic that she had constructed as workspace for the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Plus, there’s a gift shop filled with equal rights gifts and collectibles.
