Abolitionist orator Frederick Douglass made Rochester his home for many years, and suffragist Susan B. Anthony was a life-long resident. Buffalo Bill Cody called Rochester home in the 1870s. He also buried three of his children at renowned Mount Hope Cemetery. The 1905, the Dentzel menagerie carousel at Ontario Beach Park was the first model of its kind produced and the only antique carousel in the country to permanently remain at its original location. Rochester is a player in the apparel industry: Jesse Hatch invented the first baby shoes in Rochester in the 1840s; Amelia Bloomer invented her namesake garment here too; and today, Rochester-based Hickey-Freeman remains the largest manufacturer of tailored men’s clothing in the United States. Western Union, Zerox, Kodak and Bausch & Laumb were all founded in Rochester. Actors Tyson Beckfor, Taye Diggs, Lauren Holly, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John Lithgow, and Kristen Wiig are all from Rochester.
