This restaurant has been open since 1887, when its primary function was serving butchers working at the nearby slaughterhouses. The menu reflects the restaurant’s history, with meat-heavy Roman soul food. Specialties on the “historical tasting menu” include veal trotter salad, braised oxtail stew and tripe, but don’t worry, there are plenty of non-offal options for the unadventurous eater. Checchino also boasts a large wine cellar with more than 600 varieties that’s built into the cave system underneath the restaurant.
