Sacramento is a city rich with railroad history; it’s the birthplace of both the Transcontinental and the Sacramento Valley Railroad lines. Step into the California State Railroad Museum, one of Sacramento’s most popular attractions, and you’ll step back in history. The 100,000-square-foot space holds 21 restored locomotives and cars, including a Pullman-style sleeping car, a dining car filled with railroad china, and a Railway Post Office. Take a 25 minute train ride from the depot at 34th street down to 16th and back. More than 500,000 people visit this interactive and historical museum annually. And, most fittingly, Sacramento’s Amtrak station is located just next door, allowing visitors to arrive at the museum via modern-day trains.
