John Sutter founded Sacramento’s first settlement in 1839 and created an agricultural empire. Then less than 10 years later, California gold seekers came in droves to the town during the Gold Rush. Today, the fort serves as a historical and educational site, teaching about California life in the 1800s, before, during and after the Gold Rush. Visitors can tour Sutter’s Fort through self-guided audio tours. The exhibit rooms include copper and blacksmith’s shops, a bakery, a prison, a dining room and living quarters, and more. Volunteers throughout the exhibits are dressed in period costumes and talk to visitors in character, giving a sense of living history.
