The Crest Theatre is a true Sacramento gem. Built in 1912, the theater was originally called The Empress and held vaudeville shows. Next came The Hippodrome, also a vaudeville theater that later transitioned to showing movies in the 1920s. In 1946, the interior was remodeled, and the theater became the Crest. It closed in 1979, but a group of locals lovingly preserved and reopened the theater in 1986. In the ’90s, the Crest received a $1 million face-lift to bring back the original 1940s glitz and glamour, complete with a gold leaf art deco interior and a fabulous marquis that lights up K Street. Seeing a movie here is a magical experience that will transport you back to the heydays of motion pictures.
