Lay of the Land

There are four major highways that go through Sacramento: Interstate 80, Interstate 5, U.S. 50 and state Route 99. The main sectors of the city are Midtown (hip, urban, full of boutiques and nightlife and 1900s Victorian-style buildings), Downtown (high-rise buildings punctuated by the Capitol), Old Town (right on the river and featuring many historic buildings), and East Sacramento (residential, full of green parks and 1940s-style homes). Downtown and Midtown Sacramento are laid out in a grid system with letters and numbers—lettered streets run east/west, and numbered streets run north/south. Downtown, while quaint, can be confusing—watch out for one-way streets! Sacramento International Airport, which just finished a $1 billion upgrade, is approximately 12 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento. Two rivers dissect the city: the American River and the Sacramento River, making recreational water activities a top attraction in the city.
