About five miles south of the Alamo, get to the heart of San Antonio’s heritage by visiting the city’s majestic, old Spanish missions. They date from the 18th century but after years of vigorous restoration work, they’re hardly crumbling ruins. Mission San José gets the most tourists but the church at Mission Concepción is stunning, even for the non-religious. Check out the bilingual Sunday service at Mission Concepción at noon that features a mariachi band. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park contains the historically and architecturally significant structures of missions Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada. Other important cultural resources included are the historic Espada Dam and Aqueduct, acequia (irrigation) systems and the Rancho de las Cabras.
