There are worse things to do than carry a spectacular sombrero home on the plane. For a full immersion into the vibrant colors and culture of San Antonio, you can’t beat an afternoon at El Mercado, the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico. San Antonians have been shopping the market square since the 1820’s (when strolling women known as “chili queens” provided dining options). The Market Square is comprised of three adjacent markets: Farmers Market Plaza, El Mercado and Produce Row. El Mercado has a wide variety of dining, shopping (from leather goods to jewelry to Mexican foodstuffs), and events, and offers an animated escape and the opportunity to find many unique treasures. When you need to take a break, La Margarita (serving amazing guacamole puffy tacos, lethal margaritas and oysters) and Mi Tierra are awesome spots to eat, drink and continue to soak up the city’s unique character.
