Once only open to benefit local historical and charitable organizations, the Mercer Williams House Museum’s vast collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques is now open to the public. Designed by New York architect John S. Norris, the home’s construction began in 1860, but was interrupted by the Civil War and completed in 1868. In 1969 the home became one of the restoration projects undertaken by expert Jim Williams, who is responsible for the refurbishment of more than 50 homes in and around Savannah during his 30-year career. The Mercer House and Williams were brought to public prominence by the novel and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Today, the Mercer House is the primary residence of Dorothy Kingery, William’s sister, who is an active member of the community.
