Tracing its roots back to the 1700s, this French-Gothic style cathedral is an impressive piece of architecture worth visiting. Topped with a bell from the 1900s weighing 4,730 pounds and 207-foot-tall steeples, the structure is adorned in stained glass and terra cotta gargoyles. The cathedral’s upper and lower floors are a combined 28,000 square feet with ornate marble alters found throughout the interior, including a main alter carved in Italy of Carrar marble that weighs 9,000 pounds. The seat of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah, the historic landmark was dedicated in 1876, but damaged by fire in 1898. It has undergone several restorations, the most recent involving the replacement of the slate roof and refurbishment of the original murals and stained glass.
