The oldest public art museum in the South, Telfair Museums is comprised of three buildings, including the Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas House—two circa 1820 National Historic Landmark buildings—and the contemporary Jepson Center for the Arts. Its permanent collection, featuring approximately 4,000 works of art from America and Europe that date from the 18th to the 21st centuries, include paintings from Childe Hassam and Frederick Frieseke. Be sure to see the historic furnishings from 1750 to 1830 in the Owens-Thomas House before taking a stroll through the English-inspired parterre garden and original carriage house, which contains one of the earliest intact urban slave quarters in the South. Designed by Moshe Safdie, the Jepson Center features 7,500 square feet of gallery space, a 220-seat auditorium and 3,500-square-foot interactive gallery for children.
