The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, often called the “Ballard Locks,” lie at the western end of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. They were constructed to raise and lower ships to allow them to pass between fresh water and salt water and are operated by the Army Corp of Engineers. The locks visitor center is home to a fish ladder where you can watch salmon swimming the 21 steps or “weirs” as they climb to the freshwater side. Afterwards, stroll around the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden as you watch the boats go by.
