Names to Know

The most populous city in China is rich in history. The Song Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty played important roles in the city’s development. One place you’ll feel the history come to life is the City God Temple, one of the most important pieces of iconic architecture in Shanghai. It was converted into its current incarnation during the Yongle era of the Ming dynasty in 1403, and is dedicated to three city gods: Huo Guang, a famous Han Dynasty Chancellor; Qin Yubo, a civil servant during the Yuan Dynasty; and Chen Huacheng, a Qing Dynasty general.
