What to Pack

The best time to visit Shanghai is in spring or autumn, as the city has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Overall, the weather in Shanghai is mild and moist. The highest temperatures occur in July and August, and the coldest period is from late January to early February. One of the rainiest periods is from mid-June to early July during the méiyǔ (or plum rain) season, when rainfall totals can accumulate to up to 25 percent of the city’s annual totals. If you’re heading to town during that time, raincoats and umbrellas or rain hats are recommended. From late August through early September, typhoons can bring heavy rain to the region, and no umbrella, regardless how solid, will be of much help then. Think a light coat and sweater for spring, and long- and short-sleeved shirts for summer. In autumn, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters and a coat are necessary, while an overcoat is needed in the winter.
