Raffles Hotel, Raffles Hospital, Raffles College… If there’s one name that you’ll notice time and again, it’s Raffles. The city’s founder was Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (you’ll see Stamford used often, too). A British statesman, he established Singapore as a trading post in 1819, firmly placing the city on the world map of commerce.
