Grab a bike or some walking shoes and hit the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail to experience a real piece of Old Florida. The 16-mile trail runs from Tallahassee, past the Apalachicola National Forest, to the costal community of St. Marks. The Historic Railroad Trail is actually a former railroad corridor that was used to carry cotton from the plantation belt to the coast for shipment to textile mills in New England and Europe. Locals love to bike down the trail (which has recently been repaved and widened to 12 feet across) and stop in St. Marks for lunch, then head back to Tallahassee. The view past the Apalachicola National Forest and the smell of the ocean is a favorite of residents and travelers alike. The Great Bicycle Shop (1909 Thomasville Road, 850-224-7461) has bikes and equipment available for rent for use on the trail. Make sure to call them in advance for bike rental details. A parking lot for the Tallahassee-St. Marks Trail is located on S.R. 363, just south of Tallahassee at the entrance of the trail.
