Almost 80 acres of island are yours for the exploring at Peanut Island in West Palm Beach. The name “Peanut” was given to the island when the State gave permission for use of the island as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. Now, the land is a state park and travelers and locals visit daily to explore the beach or swim in the surrounding waters. Take a walk around the 1.25-mile brick path that surrounds the island or snorkel at the reef and shallow lagoon, which are unique features of the island’s wetland habitats. You can enter the snorkeling reef from the beach, where you’ll see fish such as snapper, grouper, grunts, snook, sergeant majors, porkfish and parrotfish. You can also head out on foot on the reef boardwalk and look for manatees enjoying the warm water.
