Built as temples to the gods and resting places for Egyptian pharaohs, the pyramids of the Giza plateau, about 10 miles from Cairo, were designed to prepare the kings for the afterlife. It’s thought that about 20,000 workers took more than 20 years to build the Great Pyramid using ramps, basic tools and surveying methods that relied heavily on astronomy.
