“What I enjoy about Plaza Mayor and its surrounding streets is the energy and the heightened sense of excitement for life at each turn,” Estevez says. “It’s a central location that lives and breathes history perfectly in alignment with its modern sensibilities.”

Estevez says one of his favorite areas of Madrid is La Latina, the district that borders the Plaza Mayor, in the oldest part of the city. The district is known for its high concentration of tapas bars and nightlife. On Sunday, visit the El Rastro flea market.

“Without fail, you must visit the Mercado de San Miguel, just outside the Plaza Mayor’s walls,” he says. “It is a newly restored marketplace with fantastic food and produce vendors. It’s like having a personal dinner party with hundreds of other people.”

Casa Lucio is a great restaurant, serving Madrid’s finest contemporary cuisine, such as pimiento de pardon and juevos estrellas,” Estevez says. “And Casa Paco nearby is a similar idea, but they specialize in meat dishes.” (Find Casa Lucio: Calle Cava Baja 35; Casa Paco: Puerta Cerrada 11)

For the literary set, Estevez says that visiting Botin is a must. “It’s where Hemingway ate and drank,” he says. “It’s always a fun stop, primarily for its history.” The restaurant is also said to have been frequented by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Gastromanias, a bookstore made for foodies, is located in the San Miguel Market, one of the oldest covered markets in Madrid.

With a career that has spanned more than 30 years, actor and former Brat Packer Emilio Estevez has moved behind the camera as of late. In 2006, he wrote and directed the Golden Globe-nominated film Bobby, and next month, he will release The Way, which stars his father, Martin Sheen, and is set along the famed Camino de Santiago in Spain. Estevez spent two months in Madrid before production began and quickly took to the city.

“Madrid is enjoyed most from the ground, exploring your way through its narrow streets that always lead to some intriguing park, market, tapas bar or street performer,” Estevez says. “Each night we’d leave our hotel to begin a new adventure in Madrid and nine out of 10 times, we’d walk through the Plaza Mayor.”—Erin Gulden
