High Point Market
Welcome to High Point Market, the “world’s home for home furnishings.” The city bustles at market with manufacturers, buyers and press arriving from every corner of the world. This market, there were large numbers of Russians, Estonians, Middle Easterners and Chinese in attendance.
British telephone booths
High Point has unexpected nooks and crannies. Here’s the lot where we park our car near the furniture showrooms. The lot sells amazing garden ornaments as well as vintage British telephone booths. And they ship!
Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams
Here’s John with the fabulous Mindy Drucker at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. MG+BW turned up the whimsy this season, and they are offering fabulous Brit-wit influences like armchairs with ball-and-claw feet. Plus, I am crazy about their flame stitch and plaid fabrics.
Alexa Hampton
Here we are with interior design superstar Alexa Hampton at Hickory Chair. Alexa designs the amazing Alexa Hampton Furniture Collection for HC, and she always has stunning pieces. Plus, she has the most amazing eyelashes, is hilarious and super witty.
Hickory Chair
I spent my entire market Tweeting and sending Facebook updates about my favorite finds. Plus, it gave me the chance to test the furniture. Here I am Tweeting about antiqued mirrors at the Hickory Chair showroom.
Pearson
One of my favorite brands is Pearson. Creative director Jennifer McConnell is brilliant and has one of the best sets of eyes in the business. Here’s a glorious room at the Pearson showroom that has been painted in an amped-up Benjamin Moore Raspberry Glaze, and don’t even get me started on the delicious furniture creations. Look at those chairs with the floral-and-monkey pattern. Divine!
Halo Styles
Bowler hats transformed into uber-witty chandeliers at Halo Styles. Halo crafts amazing new furnishings and also sells antiques and vintage finds. I picked up an Etonian-styled boater hat here. It will be part of my whole A Room with a View summer uniform motif.
Lee Industries
Here I am road-testing the furniture at Lee Industries. No, I was not napping! I just look like it. Although I probably did have a glass of wine in me by this point as our Lee meeting was at 5:30 p.m. The folks in High Point love a good bucket of wine.
Animal print
Every room needs an animal print. Take it from the dynamic duo at John Loecke Inc. (that’s my interior design firm). Look at these faux zebra numbers at Lee Industries.
House Beautiful Southern Supper
Walking into House Beautiful magazine’s Southern Supper party at a private home in High Point. The gal in red is our extraordinary pal and licensing superstar Christine Phillips (check out her sky-high gold Prada sandals). The dapper gent to her right is LA lifestyle guru and interior design whiz Barclay Butera. The supper was fabulous fun!
Currey & Co.
John found a seat in the back garden at the House Beautiful Southern Supper. Joining us is the madcap and marvelous Bethanne Matari of Currey & Co., a fabulous source for lighting and furnishings, and Cecil Adams, Currey’s dashing creative director. These two are pistols. Bang-bang.
C.R. Laine
C.R. Laine is one hidden gem of a brand. It manufactures the most amazing furnishings and at an incredible price point. Best of all, you can customize many elements of the furnishings to give them a truly custom look. The visionary behind the brand is our dynamic pal Holly Blalock. She is a treat. Here, a pair of chairs in a smart green fabric that we plan to use in a client’s living room. Look at that black welting that really sets off the green.
Pimento cheese
Holly Blalock at C.R. Laine knows that I love a good Southern snack, so she offered a spread of creamy and spicy pimento cheese just for me. Pimento cheese is made of cheddar cheese, mayonnaise and pimentos. Delicious! And it would probably survive a nuclear fallout.
Pendant lights
Giant ethnic-inspired pendant lights at Currey & Co. I want to hang these in my upstate New York kitchen. I love a good Moroccan moment.
Tony Sink
John browses for antiques at our dear friend Tony Sink’s emporium on Main Street in High Point. Sink has a fabulous eye and a fabulous heart. It’s always such a treat to see him.
The Dog House
We always have to stop at The Dog House when we visit High Point. Open since 1942, this institution serves fabulous hot dogs and burgers three ways. I go for the loaded and sit at the throwback lunch counter.
Inspired by Tony Duquette
Pictured is the amazing Tony Duquette-inspired room at the sumptuous Baker Furniture outpost. Tony Duquette was a fabled Hollywood designer, and Baker now manufactures several of the pieces that he designed. This room was so amazing and transporting. TD would have been proud.
Antiques
Here I am shopping for antiques in Greensboro, North Carolina. This booth is owned by Todd Nabors, who has a fabulous eye. We always hit up his selections when we are in the area.
Lilly Pulitzer Home
Taking in the color-packed Lilly Pulitzer Home showroom. Passionate about color, I love her creations whether home or apparel. I grew up in Florida, so I have been mad for Lilly Pulitzer since I was a little boy.

Every spring and fall, the furniture industry descends upon otherwise sleepy High Point, North Carolina, for the High Point Market. It’s sort of like Fashion Week: Manufacturers unveil their latest chairs, sofas and settees, and there are gobs of high-flying parties and events. Plus, all of the top shelter magazine editors descend upon High Point so you are likely to run into Architectural Digest Editor in Chief Margaret Russell or Newell Turner from House Beautiful. You might even see high-octane design bloggers such as Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of Apartment Therapy and marquee-name interior designers. John and I have been attending market for almost 10 years, so we have seen lots of ups and a few downs due to the fickle economy. This year was definitely an up, and our furniture friends admit to having stellar sales. Here’s a taste of our four-day visit to High Point Market. Of course, we also fit in a few visits to Chick-fil-A and antiques outposts between showroom visits.
