A society dedicated to the preservation of the city, Historic Charlotte, Inc. maintains a website with suggestions for several free walking and driving tours. Visitors can download and print the tours and explore each neighborhood at their leisure. The Uptown Mid-Century tour focuses on buildings and architecture, the Center City tour explores the historic buildings near Trade and Tryon Streets, the Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery tour wanders through this serene memorial and oasis and the Rural Hill tour examines the homestead of John Davidson, son of a Scottish immigrant. The 55-mile African American Heritage driving tour stops at culturally rich locations in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area. Special events are also held throughout the year, and those who happen to visit in May will be treated to special Preservation Month tours.
