No trip to the south is complete without a visit to a plantation. The Rosedale Plantation, which was built on 919 acres by Archibald Frew in 1815, is a superb example of a plantation and manor estate. D. T. Caldwell and his family took over the plantation in the 1830s, and two families of slaves helped run the estate. They were emancipated following the Civil War, and several of them adopted the Caldwell name. The manor is a remarkable example of Federal architecture, and it contains original surviving faux-grained paneling, French wallpaper from the 1800s and hand-carved classical mantels. Stroll the 8.5-acre grounds to view a number of garden areas, six designated “Treasure Trees” and the remains of outbuildings.
