The centerpiece of the city since its origins in 1204, the castle has played many roles in Ireland’s history. Sprawling across 11 acres of land, it was originally built as a means of defense, and later became a place of residence for country leaders and the site of extravagant social life. These days, visitors can explore the grounds, which contain, two museums, an international conference center, cafes, gardens and other government buildings. The State Apartments, accessible only by guided tour, contain some of the most historically significant staterooms in the country; they’re currently used for Ireland's presidencies of the European Union, presidential inaugurations and other prestigious events. Take advantage of free admission if you’re in town the first Wednesday of the month.
