Learn the history of Fort Lauderdale from the pioneers to the present day at this history center situated on the New River. Walk around the 1905 New River Inn, which houses the museum of history and is the first building in Broward County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built of hollow concrete blocks and sand from the beach, the New River Inn is Broward’s oldest remaining hotel building, which set the standard for much of the community’s construction. Operating until 1955, the hotel featured 24 guest rooms and was lit with carbide lamps. The history center also includes the 1907 King-Cromartie House, once home to contractor Edwin T. King, and the 1899 Replica School House, which was constructed in the 1970s as a project for the U.S. Bicentennial.
