Frank Stranahan, Fort Lauderdale’s first postmaster, and his wife, Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, the area’s first teacher, built this home in 1901. Used as a trading post, post office and town hall, it became the center of activity in the settlement of Fort Lauderdale. Today, the wood-frame vernacular building is the oldest surviving structure in Broward County. Stand on the wide porch overlooking the Virginia English gardens and views of the New River and learn about the important role the home played in Fort Lauderdale’s growth and development. The museum also offers a River Ghost Tour in conjunction with the Water Taxi where visitors can learn about the tales and spirits of the area.
