Just off Highway 221 lies Walnut Grove Plantation, an original Southern plantation with roughly three centuries of history to its name. Once the home of the colonial Moore family, the site exists today as a living history museum, complete with hourly guided tours of the Moore home, a typical plantation kitchen and one of the first schools in the area. Learn about the family and their slaves; walk the grounds and visit the family cemetery, blacksmith lodge, smoke house, wheat house and other surviving buildings; and hike the site’s nature trail and enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of the pavilion. Restrooms, drinks and snacks are available on site at the Visitors Center and Gift Shop, where you can pick up handcrafted items made by plantation artists, 18th-century replica toys and games and a wide variety of books about Southern history. Though the plantation offers limited tours in the winter, group excursions of 10 or more can be scheduled anytime.
