For the truly adventurous, the lure of 13,775-foot Grand Teton is compelling. The park’s highest and most prominent peak is a classic mountaineering destination, a place for experienced and intermediate mountaineers to test their mettle. Based in the park, Exum Guides is one of the most experienced outfits in all of mountaineering, and with a bit of preparation, they can guide even relatively green climbers on a two-day trip “up the Grand.” Inexperienced climbers must take a pair of prerequisite climbing classes before hiking to a spartan base camp on a saddle below the peak, then rise at 3 a.m. to make an assault on the summit. Gear and meals are provided—bring your own exuberance for the moment of triumph at the top. Of course, Exum also leads a number of less-ambitious trips to smaller peaks and cliff faces around the park.
