You can’t throw a rock around Jackson without hitting a howling-wolf dreamcatcher or a paint-by-numbers elk herd, but not all wildlife art is of the cheesey souvenir variety. Perched on a high butte on the north of edge of town, the National Museum of Wildlife Art has 14 galleries’ worth of truly impressive animal sculptures and canvasses. Among the highlights are Robert Bateman’s Chief, a 6-by-8-foot acrylic painting of a bison looking out with a penetrating stare. The outdoor sculpture garden, new in 2012, reveals amazing details of anatomy and emotion captured in iron and bronze. An outdoor deck offers sweeping views into the National Elk Refuge below. Plan a day here and check the museum’s event calendar for special youth art programs, photography workshops and more.
