Kid Curry, a member of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, shot two deputies in 1901 and escaped into the Old City. Once captured, he was brought to the Knoxville Jail, but escaped again, stole the sheriff’s horse and was last seen riding away across the Gay Street Bridge. Much of Cormac McCarthy’s famous novel Suttree takes place in Knoxville, primarily in the Old City. In one scene, Suttree walks along Central Street on the way to the butcher and other scenes take place at the Corner Grill, which was later renamed the Corner Lounge. The confluence of the French Broad and the Holston Rivers in Knoxville forms the headwaters of the Tennessee River.
