James White was the first to arrive in Knoxville with a massive land grant, and is considered the founder of the city, hence the White name is ubiquitous. Knoxville was named after Henry Knox, President Washington’s War Secretary. McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville is named in honor of Knoxville native and Lt. Charles McGhee Tyson, a World War I fighter piolot who was shot down over the North Sea.
