Locals have nicknamed this natural paradise “the Kettles,” and they flock west of Milwaukee on weekends to bicycle, hike, cross-country ski and mountain bike through these woods. Its hills and depressions (also called kettles) were carved into the landscape by the Ice Age. Divided into two units—North (30,000 acres and a section of the National Ice Age Scenic Trail) and South (22,000 acres, 37 miles southwest of downtown Milwaukee)—the state park land stretches as far north as Sheboygan and south into Whitewater. Overnight camping facilities are scattered throughout the forest, with details available from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
