Sanford d’Amato, proprietor and chef of this fine-dining restaurant, helped put Milwaukee on the culinary map, earning four James Beard awards for Best Chef-Midwest. Sanford d'Amato has since passed the torch to current executive chef and owner Justin Aprahamian, a longtime employee of Sanford, who certainly does not disappoint. Start with a cucumber tonic, a farm-fresh cocktail, and ease into a French-inspired meal with appetizers such as the duck corn dog topped with foie-gras mustard and cherry tomatoes, followed by a hearty entrée such as char-grilled loin of elk with tart-cherry reduction and maple-mascarpone polenta. Wisconsin artisan cheeses are the perfect palate cleanser before innovative desserts (Wisconsin apricots pop up in the tart). A seven-course chef’s menu, including wine pairings, is available weekdays only.
