Did You Know

Nice has always had closer ties to neighboring Italy than to France, first in the Genoese league and later as part of the Holy Roman Empire. In fact, Italy’s great unifying hero, Garibaldi, was born and raised here, and fought hard to keep Nice when it was given to Napoleon III in exchange for help fighting a war against Austria. The Italian-influenced food and architecture remains, but the local language of Nissart, closer to Italian than to French, has been mostly erased by efforts to unify France. It’s still visible on the dual street signs posted in Vieux Nice.
